Photographing a large family can be a fun and rewarding experience. With multiple generations coming together, there's a beautiful dynamic to capture. This particular family was full of energy and holiday spirit. We met near the Newport Pier and took advantage of the stunning beach scenery. One of the key advantages of our on-site studio lighting is that we can control the light, even outdoors. This eliminates the harsh shadows and squinting faces that often occur when shooting in direct sunlight, especially during the golden hour. This is particularly beneficial for those with light eyes, who are often more sensitive to bright light. The children were playful and excited, which made for some wonderful candid shots, while the adults were happy to pose for more formal family portraits. As the sun began to set, the light became even more magical, adding a warm and golden glow to the entire session.

My client, a successful entrepreneur, and owner of a cigar company, started our session like any other—focused and ready to capture the perfect professional headshot. But midway through the session, he casually pulled out a cigar and mentioned that he wanted to incorporate it into the shoot. The room instantly filled with a rich, curling smoke, and I knew we were about to create something extraordinary.
Cigar photography isn’t just about the person holding the cigar; it’s about capturing the luxury, the texture, and the atmosphere that a well-crafted cigar can evoke. The lighting setup in my studio was perfect for highlighting the dramatic contrasts that black-and-white photography demands.
